There's something extra special about giving a handmade card—especially one painted with your own two hands.
Whether you're celebrating a big game, cheering on your favorite player, or just sending some football-season love, a watercolor football card is a beautiful (and surprisingly easy!) way to share a bit of yourself.
For this card, I painted a football — simple, graphic, and perfect for any football fan in your life. Any object can be charming when painted in watercolor!
I'll walk you through how to watercolor your own football greeting card, step by step. I've included photos and links to all the materials I use so you can follow along and make your own.
✨ Materials You'll Need
Before we start, here's what you'll want to gather:

A pencil for sketching

A waterproof pen or fineliner (for the laces and details)

A small paintbrush (I use round brushes, fineliner and size 6 round brush)

🎨 Step-by-Step: Watercolor Football Card Tutorial
Step 1: Choose Your Reference
Start by looking at a real football or searching Google for a reference image. Notice the oval shape, the seam lines, and the laces — these details are what make it recognizable!
Step 2: Lightly Sketch Your Design
Using a pencil, lightly draw the football shape — a simple oval with a slight point at each end. Sketch in the center seam and lace lines. Keep your lines faint — you'll paint over them or erase them once dry.
Step 3: Ink the Design
Use a waterproof pen to carefully trace over your sketch, including the laces and seam. Let the ink dry completely before adding watercolor so it doesn't smear.
Step 4: Add Watercolor
Now the fun part! Mix a warm brown — think burnt sienna or raw umber — and slowly fill in the football shape. Use light layers and build color gradually.
🖌️ Tip: Keep a paper towel nearby to blot excess water or lift paint.
Paint a light layer first, then add a darker brown along the edges and seam to give the ball dimension. While it's still wet, blend the color toward the center for a nice gradient.
Add a small, dark shadow beneath the ball to help it pop off the page.
Step 6: Write a cute note inside
Once your watercolor is fully dry, use a pen or pencil to write!
Step 6: Let It Dry + Send It Off
Let everything dry completely before folding or packaging your card. Then tuck it into an envelope and send some handmade joy through the mail. ✉️
