I’m so happy to share a behind-the-scenes look at how my Charlotte’s Web story map came to life. This one felt like stepping into a late-summer barn, where the air is warm, the smell of earth is sweet, and secret messages are woven into spider webs.

It all began with a pencil sketch and a dog-eared copy of Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.

“You have been my friend. That in itself is a tremendous thing.” –Charlotte

Here’s what went into the design:

🐷 A layout inspired by the original story.

🌾 Nostalgic colors in faded reds, soft golds, and a blue-grey.

🕸️ Hidden details like Charlotte’s corner, Templeton’s secret stash, and the county fair tent.

First, I jot down the faces and places I meet in the story.

The Zuckerman barn, the pigpen, the fairgrounds, and arrange them in sections that feel like the seasons turning. I sketch my favorite scenes.

🖊️ Next, I use my architectural pen to refine my sketch. This pen is waterproof and creates beautiful lines for me to paint in later. Kind of like a watercolor coloring sheet!

🎨 Now the painting begins! I spend a lot of time getting the colors right. When I say "right," I really just mean the way that I imagine the story. To me, Charlotte’s Web feels tender and hopeful, so I choose colors that hum with life!

🖌️ The painting part takes about two days. I let layers of it dry, and I always like to study my painting on day two to see it with fresh eyes. I like to go in with new layers of paint to deepen hues and darken shadows to add dimension to Charlotte and Wilbur’s world.
