I’m thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how my Jane Eyre story map came to life. This one felt like stepping into a world of moral fire, haunting secrets, and the quiet triumph of self-respect.
Like all my maps, it began with a pencil sketch, a well-thumbed novel, and a steaming cup of tea; the sort that might have been poured at a draughty table in Thornfield Hall.
“I am not an angel, and I will not be one till I die: I will be myself.” -Jane Eyre

Here’s what went into the design:
🕯️ A layout inspired by Gothic architecture. Turrets, arches, and hidden chambers.
🌾 Watercolors steeped in misty blues, simple greens, and the gold of summer light over the moor.
🕊️ Hidden details like Adele, Jane’s veil, and a wisp of smoke rising from Thornfield.
Let’s open the heavy oak doors together. Into the stillness of Lowood’s schoolroom, through the shadowy attic where whispers grow loud, into the warmth of the garden where love blooms, and out again into the vast, lonely moors.
✨After jotting down the places and moments I want to capture, I begin to design where they should go.

🖊️ Next, I use my architecture pen to refine my sketch. Each pointed roof and sweeping landscape must be outlined in ink that won’t wash away beneath the watercolor.

🎨 Now the painting begins! I spend a lot of time getting the colors right. When I say "right," I really just mean the way that I imagine the story. To me, Jane Eyre feels like hopeful, bright greens with an underpinning of haunting blues and defined shadows.

🖌️ Let's paint! This part takes about two days. I let part of it dry, and I always like to study my painting on day two to see it with fresh eyes. Day two is when I add richer shadows in the forest and glints of light in the upper manor window.

📚 Once finished, you’ll find me tucked by the window with the wind rattling the panes, reading Brontë by lamplight. Some stories leave a lingering echo in the heart, and Jane Eyre is one of them. It’s a reminder that independence and love, when true, walk hand in hand.
