I’m so delighted to share how my Nutcracker story map came to life!

This one felt like velvet curtains opening, a hush before the first note of the orchestra, and the soft sparkle of Christmas lights against frosted windows.Ā

ā€œWith imagination, my dear Clara, the world is more magical than you know.ā€ —Godfather Drosselmeyer

Here’s what went into the design:
šŸŽ„ A layout inspired by classic ballet staging and Hoffmann’s timeless tale.

šŸ–Œļø Watercolors filled with candlelit warmth, shimmering gold, and snowy whites.

šŸ¬ Details like Clara’s living room, the Mouse King’s battlefield, the Land of Sweets, and the Almond Raisin Arch.

Ā

As always, I start with a sketch. I jot down all the places I ā€œvisitā€ in the story. Places like the glowing Christmas tree, the grand battle of toys and mice, and the shimmering Marzipan Castle.

Ā

Ā

šŸ–Šļø Next, I use my architectural pen to refine my sketch. This pen is waterproof and creates lines for me to paint in later. Kind of like a watercolor coloring sheet!Ā

Ā

Ā

šŸŽØ Now the painting begins! I spend a lot of time getting the colors right. When I say "right," I really just mean the way that I imagine the story. For the Nutcracker, I blend warm festive reds with frosty blues and greens. I want each corner of the map to feel like a scene from the ballet, alive with movement and wonder.

Ā

Ā

šŸ–Œļø Let's paint! This part takes about two days. I let part of it dry, and I always like to study my painting on day two to see it with fresh eyes. I like to go in with new layers of paint to deepen hues and darken shadows to add dimension to the Nutcracker map.Ā

Ā

Ā

Ā

🌟 Now that the painting is done, you’ll probably find me listening to Tchaikovsky’s music while imagining snowflakes twirling and the Sugarplum Fairy taking her bow.Ā

Painting the Nutcracker is hard work, but I’m so happy to do it!
