I’m so delighted to share how my Once Upon a Time story map came to life!

This one felt so nostalgic to make! This map features some of my favorite princesses, including Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Sleeping Beauty.

A framed Once Upon a Time Map

Here’s what went into the design:

🍃 A layout inspired by enchanted lands and long-lost kingdoms.

🖌️ Watercolors inspired by spring flowers, fireflies, and glowing sunsets. 

🥀 Details like Snow White’s red apple, Rapunzel’s golden hair, Cinderella’s glass slipper, and Aurora’s thorny rose. 

 

As always, I start with a sketch. I begin mapping out where I want each princess and her kingdom to reside on the map. 

 

 

🖊️ Next, I use my architectural pen to refine my sketch. This pen is waterproof and creates lines for me to paint in later. Kind of like a watercolor coloring sheet! 

 

 

🎨 Now the painting begins! I spend a lot of time getting the colors right. When I say "right," I really just mean the way that I imagine the story. Since I’m painting so many kingdoms in one map, I had to choose my colors carefully. I wanted all my kingdoms to be cohesive, yet still contain the unique characteristics of each one. 

 

 

🖌️ Let's paint! This part takes about two days. I let part of it dry, and I always like to study my painting on day two to see it with fresh eyes. I like to go in with new layers of paint to deepen hues and darken shadows to add dimension to the Once Upon a Time map. 

 

 

Painting these fairytales is hard work, but I’m so happy to do it!
