I’m so happy to share a behind-the-scenes look at how my Peter Rabbit story map came to life!
Like all my maps, it began with a dog-eared book, a cup of tea, and a sketchbook waiting to be filled with adventures in the garden.

Here’s what went into the design:
🌿 A layout inspired by English cottage gardens and winding country paths.
🖌️ Watercolors inspired by soft spring greens, earthy browns, and gentle blues.
🥕 Delightful details like Peter’s blue jacket, Mr. McGregor’s gate, and cozy rabbit holes.
I always begin by jotting down the people and places I meet in the story, then I piece them together into a map.
🖊️ Next, I use my architecture pen to refine my sketch. This pen is waterproof and creates lines for me to paint in later. Kind of like a watercolor coloring sheet!
🎨 Now the painting begins! I spend a lot of time getting the colors right. When I say "right," I really just mean the way that I imagine the story. For this map, I chose a gentle color palette, soft and nostalgic, the way I imagine Beatrix Potter’s Lake District.
🖌️ Let's paint! This part takes about two days. I let part of it dry, and I always like to study my painting on day two to see it with fresh eyes. I like to go in with new layers of paint to deepen hues and darken shadows to add dimension to Peter Rabbit’s Garden.
🌼 And now that the painting is complete, I like to imagine myself in a quiet meadow, sketchbook in hand, listening to birdsong while Peter and his sisters scamper nearby.

Painting this story is hard work, but I’m so happy to do it!
